Secure sign-in, dependable mobile voice, and richer expressions
This release adds authenticator-based 2FA and phone-approved QR login, improves Android call behavior and efficiency, and expands mcord's self-hosted expression and notification systems. These notes are generated from the same stable release manifest used by mcord download surfaces.
Account protection and dependable sign-in
Version 0.2.6 adds authenticator-based two-factor authentication, recovery codes, and a short-lived desktop QR login that must be approved from an already signed-in phone.
The release also tightens sensitive account changes and fixes the first mobile sign-in flow so a successful authentication opens mcord without requiring an app restart.
- Authenticator two-factor protection: Protect your account with time-based 6-digit codes from any standard authenticator. Setup uses a locally rendered QR, verifies the first code before activation, and provides one-time recovery codes you can copy or download.
- Step-up protection for account changes: Accounts with 2FA must confirm a fresh authenticator or recovery code before changing the primary password. Login challenges are invalidated by password changes, repeated codes are blocked, and security attempts are rate-limited per account.
- Phone-approved desktop QR login: Sign in on desktop by scanning its short-lived QR from an already authenticated phone, matching a separate 6-digit code, and explicitly approving the device. Passwords and session tokens are never embedded in the QR.
- Reliable mobile QR scanning: Android now bypasses unreliable WebView QR detection and uses mcord's bundled self-hosted decoder. The scanner reads the full camera frame, immediately confirms detection, keeps errors visible, and guides the user through the matching-code approval that signs in the desktop automatically.
- First mobile sign-in opens immediately: A successful first sign-in, registration, or 2FA verification now enters mcord immediately instead of remaining on the launch screen until the Android app is restarted.
Mobile voice that behaves like a phone call
Android members can choose between the earpiece and loudspeaker while mcord accounts for Bluetooth and wired outputs. Native background call handling keeps voice sessions active while the app is minimized.
Reduced background media work and proximity behavior help the mobile client use the right screen and audio behavior during a call.
- Android speaker and earpiece routing: Choose whether voice and call audio uses the phone earpiece or loudspeaker, with routing designed for Bluetooth and wired devices instead of forcing one output.
- Mobile voice survives app switching: Android voice sessions now use native background call handling so microphone capture and incoming audio remain active when mcord is minimized or another app is opened.
- Cooler calls and natural proximity behavior: Mobile media work is reduced while the app is backgrounded, and proximity handling turns the screen off near your ear when earpiece mode is active, then restores it when you move the phone away.
Expression controls and native desktop alerts
The expression system gains bundled emoji and GIFs, larger emoji-only messages, smart emoticon conversion, and controlled animated avatar and banner playback.
Personal sound controls and native Windows alerts add per-account notification choices, taskbar badges, taskbar flashing, and message-focused toast navigation.
- Self-hosted emoji and GIF library: Use 40 bundled mcord emoji and 20 bundled GIFs from the unified picker, with search, categories, recents, favorites, guild emoji, and permitted cross-guild use.
- Bigger emoji and smart emoticons: Inline and emoji-only messages now use Discord-like sizing, while familiar text such as :), :(, ;), :D, :P, and <3 converts automatically without changing URLs, code, or custom emoji.
- Personal notification sound mixer: Set a master level and separate volumes for notifications, mentions, calls, voice joins, voice leaves, voice controls, and screen sharing, with instant previews and per-account storage.
- Controlled animated media: Optionally limit animated GIF/WebP avatars and banners to one loop plus hover replay, or turn the limit off for their original continuous loop. Channel and message media, mini profiles, and full profiles keep native playback.
- Avatar and banner controls cover every relevant surface: Guild Rail icons, channel sidebar banners, voice cards, invites, onboarding, and management previews now respect avatar and banner playback settings without freezing GIF/WebP content inside channels or messages.
- Native Windows alerts: Optional Windows toasts, a red taskbar unread counter, and taskbar flashing work while mcord is minimized or unfocused; clicking an alert restores the app at the exact message.
